Boating Deaths Have More Than Doubled in Tennessee This Year — Some Safety Reminders

Boating season is still in full swing on Tennessee waters. As for the Days, we wait until the very last minute to pull our boat out of the water for winter so that we can eek out as much time on the water as possible. Unfortunately, this has been a very deadly year on Tennessee lakes and rivers. To date, 21 people have lost their lives. Last year at this time, the number of fatalities was 9. Following a National Trend, Brentwood Sees Huge Rise in Car Accidents Thanks to Distracted Driving.

The Brentwood Police Department’s accident data shows that between 2012 and 2016 the number of crashes in Brentwood increased by an incredible 60%. Brentwood is not alone in seeing an increase in the number of car crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported this is a trend nationwide. While Brentwood’s population has grown slightly during the same time period, the biggest growth year was only 2.47%., and last year Brentwood’s growth was only .59%. Of course, non-residents use Brentwood streets too but traffic counts show the number of cars on major Brentwood thoroughfares only increased 8% between 2012 and 2017. Dog Bite Claims Increasing Nationwide

Dog ownership can be terribly expensive. Our King Charles Cavalier, Lincoln, or President Lincoln if you are not on familiar terms, has a super-sensitive digestive system, so in addition to being regulars at our vet’s office, he eats prescription dog food and often needs a pill to calm his stomach. A friend of a friend just paid $4,000 to have her dog’s knee repaired after he tore his ACL.

The 100 Deadliest Days: Advice for Parents of Teen Drivers

We are about to enter the Deadliest Days for teen drivers. The days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the most dangerous and deadly for teen drivers. Throughout the year, teen drivers ages 16 to 17 are three times more likely than adult drivers to be involved in a deadly accident. The number of fatal teen accidents spikes in the summer because teen drivers are out of school and on the roads, but there are some things parents can do:

Emphasize the importance of seatbelts. No matter how short the trip, everyone in the car should buckle up. 4,200 lives could be saved each year if 90% of the population would always wear their seatbelt.
Use apps like LifeSaver or Mojo or True Motion to block calls and texts while the vehicle is in motion. Reading just one text message requires a driver to take their eyes off the road for 5 seconds. Maybe that does not sound like a long time, but it is when you are traveling in a car. While you are driving, have your kids close their eyes and use a timer to show them just how long that really is so they can get a better sense of how far you can travel in such a short time especially at higher rates of speed.
